Deaths by Car Accident Up 20% in Houston

There are a growing number of clients looking for a Houston car accident lawyer based on a new report on Houston traffic safety. The report reveals that Houston has seen a stark increase in the number of car accidents resulting in death over the last 5 years.

Speeders Cause Most Car Accidents

The Houston-Galveston Area Council Metropolitan Planning Organization released its annual State of Safety Report for 2017 tracking the number and types of accidents occurring between 2012 and 2017 and from 2016 to 2017. What the Council found is that the number of car accidents in Houston has increased by over 40% since 2012 and that the number of accidents resulting in death has gone up by 20%.

By far, speeders caused the majority of car accidents in Houston over the last year, accounting for 30% of the total. Accidents where speeders were involved also saw the highest number of serious injuries – 769 serious injuries and 155 fatalities.

Houston Bikers See Highest Increase in Deaths

As of late, a Houston car accident lawyer is more likely to be called into a case that resulted in a fatality where a motorcycle or bicycle is involved. According to the report, the number of motorcyclists involved in a fatal car accident is up 9% while bicyclists involved in fatal car accidents is up 8%; the two biggest increases in the number of fatalities between 2015 to 2016.

Young Drivers Less Distracted but Still Dangerous

Logic would say that young drivers would be responsible for most accidents caused by distracted drivers, but that assumption would be wrong. The number of distracted drivers in Houston has actually gone down by the largest margin at -15%. Still, young drivers account for close to 20% of all car accidents, second only to speeders.

Elderly Drivers Cause More Deadly Car Accidents

Houston is seeing an increase in the number of elderly drivers on the road which is resulting in an increase in the number of fatal car accidents caused by elderly drivers. From 2015 to 2016, elderly drivers caused 5% more car accidents – tied with railroad-related car accidents – resulting in the death of 75 elderly drivers.
